May is Mental Health Awareness Month: Let’s Talk, Listen, and Support
From Ms. Geneva, our Substance Use Prevention Coordinator
Mental health is just as important as physical health — yet it’s often the part we ignore or keep quiet about. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to open the conversation about stress, anxiety, depression, and the everyday pressures that can impact how we think, feel, and function, especially for teens.
For students, academic pressure, social expectations, and uncertainty about the future can feel overwhelming. Sometimes, instead of reaching out for help, teens may turn to unhealthy coping strategies — including substance use — as a way to manage difficult emotions or escape what they’re feeling. But these quick fixes can deepen mental health struggles and create long-term problems.
That’s why open, honest dialogue is key. Mental health challenges are common and treatable, but only if we create environments where it’s safe to talk. Whether it’s a teen feeling anxious or a parent concerned about mood changes or risky behavior, knowing when to seek support can make all the difference.
For parents and caregivers, now is a good time to check in. Listen without judgment. Ask open-ended questions. Learn the signs of mental distress and substance use, and don’t be afraid to reach out to school counselors or mental health professionals if something feels off.
Our school community is committed to promoting wellness through education, resources, and ongoing support. Together, we can reduce stigma, encourage healthy coping, and help our students build a foundation for resilience, in May and every month after.
Because strong minds and safe choices lead to brighter futures, and every teen deserves that chance.
